daisy Helps Staff Kick the Habit

In the week the smoking ban came into force across England, a Nelson firm has been supporting staff that want to kick the habit.

Waseem Chaudhry, a community development officer and "Stop Smoking Service" advisor for the East Lancashire Primary Care Trust, visited Daisy on Thursday and offered advice to those wanting to stop smoking.

He hosted a two hour meeting, open to any member of staff, providing guidance on methods of giving up. He presented the "tar jar", containing cigarette butts and black tar, and explored the options for nicotine replacement therapy, including patches, lozenges, nasal sprays, inhalators and tablets.

"I try not to scare people," said Waseem. "My role is to offer advice and the most important part of that is planning and preparing people for giving up smoking. If people don't plan and prepare they tend to stop for a while and then go back."

The course lasts six weeks, and following the first group meeting, individual sessions are due to be held on a weekly basis at the company.

Daisy's commercial director Tony Dixon said the company was dedicated to helping any member of staff quit smoking and openly encouraged any member of staff wanting to give up to attend the course.

"In light of the smoking ban, the company felt it was important to offer staff wanting to give up as much help as possible," he said.

"We have held similar sessions in the past and many members of staff have taken advantage of the service and given up."
